Why Agency People Need to Hedge Their Bets

Standard

The longer you stay in this business the greater the chances are that you are going to get fired. The algorithm of the workplace today.

Sad but true. Don’t focus on the sad but anticipate and prepare for the true.

You may not believe this but I only report what I hear, see, and read in emails.

I got an email from a new friend the other day. They said they had watched one of my videos on “Why Agency Case Studies Are A Curse & A Blessing.”

My videos are produced by somebody who is 27 years old.

He was a copywriter and said he was aged out of the game.

I asked him how old he was and he said 51. Continue reading

Why The Career World is Flat in the New Normal

Standard

I remember being in elementary school in downtown Toronto and my teachers would do a history lesson about how many people in the Middle Ages or before thought the world was flat.

Many countries believed that their navy could fall off the end of the world.

How could that be? There were Portuguese students in my class.

I didn’t think it seemed feasible at the time. Where would they go I thought?

I got an email the other day from somebody who had read one of my blogs.

Her job just sailed off the edge of the world. Continue reading

I asked him how he got connected to me.

I didn’t readily recall her name but her photo on LinkedIn returned her to my memory.

I never got any business leads from her after she got the job but I got a lot of nice projects from her company. Any connection?  Who knows?

I helped her during the Great Recession. Remember the Great Recession? It started a year after the first iPhone was introduced almost to the day. Continue reading

What Do You Do?

Standard

What do you do? Good question. I was at the PRSA Western District Conference in LA recently.

Very few Advertising folks go to PR events. That is why I go.

There was an evening networking event and somebody asked me what I did? It stopped me for a while.

I don’t know why. I know what I do. Sort of anyway.

I always have my business cards in my back pockets. Both of them.

A lot of people would say I am a networker.

I always hand out my cards showing the back first. It says BLANK in large letters. Most people like that.

Always gets the conversation started. The smiles and the chuckles. That’s why it’s there. I’ve never changed the back. I have changed my job descriptions on the front over the decade I have been in business. Continue reading
